A lot of tech companies are starting to move into VR, and many of them are using preexisting IPs to try and facilitate an easier transition into the world of VR. However, it is important to note that Apple might just be the next company to make a proper foray into this field because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up expanding their influence.
This news comes about due to a new patent that Apple just filed that involves using an iPhone as a gaming controller. Apple is trying to move in a direction where people would be able to use their phones to interface with a VR environment, something that would turn it into more of a traditional gaming experience with all things having been considered and taken into account. Another thing that this would do is that it would improve the versatility of the device and make it something that a lot more people would want to end up taking advantage of.
Using an iPhone as a controller will be able to help with tracking locations which is a huge problem in VR right now. The fact that Apple is moving into this industry at the same time as TikTok means that Facebook’s delay in cashing in on their Oculus acquisition might be rather costly for them. Apple’s VR efforts are a bit different in that they are more or less gaming focused, but it will greatly increase the value of the iPhone and will potentially create a new form of hardware that Apple can sell which would basically be the VR headset that would immerse you in the virtual environment. There are a lot of problems that can occur along the way, and it will be interesting to see how the company handles them.
