The gaming industry is one of the most profitable in the world delivering revenues that are unheard of even in the movie business. Hence, it is important to look into the trends that are influencing the world of gaming because of the fact that this is the sort of thing that could potentially end up contextualizing the future of where this industry might go. This is why IDC and AppAnnie collaborated to do some research in this regard, and this research has definitely revealed a few really unique trends.
One thing that might surprise you about the data that they uncovered is that mobile gaming is actually the most profitable sector in this industry. Mobile gaming earned over $120 billion in 2021 alone, which is more than console and PC gaming combined. What’s more is that PC and console games have had static, and therefore stagnant, revenues since 2014, going from $30 billion to $40 billion for PC games and $20 billion to $40 billion for console games. That’s definitely a decent amount of growth, but it is nowhere close to what mobile games have managed.
In 2014, the revenue from mobile games was comparable to that of PC games at $30 billion. However, over the past 8 years these revenues had quadrupled and now mobile gaming is the dominant sector of the market. This industry does not look like it is going to be slowing down anytime soon, and this has the potential to make it so that a lot more games will start to be created for mobile phones. This doesn’t mean that console and PC gaming is going away though since they tend to provide an entirely different type of experience that mobile games can’t really measure up to right now since they need to be simple otherwise they’d be hard to play on phones.
