Celebrities have always had the ability to influence various age groups and events, but in this modern day and age it has become easier than ever to actually quantify how much of an influence they can end up having by analyzing their social media following and seeing who the people that are a part of this following actually are.
There has also been a relative democratization of influence as well since you no longer have to be a mainstream celebrity or sports personality to become an influencer as there are plenty of influencers that were born and bred on social media through careers that they established on platforms such as YouTube and the like.
However, it is important to note that mainstream celebrities still manage to dominate the top ten list of influencers according to a report by Visual Capitalist. This report has revealed that the most powerful influencer in the world is Cristiano Ronaldo who has well over half a billion followers with most of them being on Instagram.
He is followed by Justin Bieber who has 473 million followers with her main following being on Instagram, and the rest of the top ten list is dominated by musicians too such as Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Katy Perry and Rihanna with Rihanna being somewhat unique in that her following is on Twitter whereas all of the rest have built their followings on Instagram which reveals just how relevant this social media platform has ended up becoming.
Other celebrities in the top ten list include Dwayne Johnson who built his fame as a professional wrestler before branching out into film and television, and Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian made the list as well in the “Other” category since they have built a following through a variety of smart media deals and business endeavors.
It turns out that 33 out of the top 50 influencers are Millennials which reveals the widespread cultural influence that this generation continues to have. There are only 4 influencers on the list that belong to Gen Z, with Kylie Jenner being the most prominent person in this list. Dwayne Johnson is the biggest Gen X influencer with 9 other influencers belonging to this generation as well. Baby Boomers only managed 3 people in the top 50 with Ellen Degeneres topping the list in that category.
The average age of influencers is around 37 years old which reveals that the low numbers for Gen Z is mostly due to the reason that they are not old enough to have this much of an impact right now.
