eCommerce is On the Rise According to Latest Marketplace App Statistics

2020 turned out to be an incredible year for ecommerce and shopping apps. A lot of this had to do with the coronavirus pandemic which made it so that people couldn’t go outside as their life might have been in jeopardy, and since people still needed groceries as well as a bunch of other items that are undoubtedly necessary if you want to live a decent enough life it made sense that they would turn to shopping apps which resulted in a pretty huge boom in this industry.

It seems that this upward trajectory is going to continue for shopping apps, since this category of apps saw its strongest quarter ever. The first quarter of 2021 resulted in marketplace apps receiving an incredible 162 million installs which is the highest number that this category has ever seen, as reported by ST. However, one thing that should be taken into account is that about 33% of these installs went to Amazon and Wish which are the top marketplace apps that are currently available on US app stores.

Also, these apps are actually recovering from somewhat of a downward trajectory that they have been seeing since 2018 when their market share was as high as 40%. This came from a number of retail stores opening their own apps which users tended to favor, and these apps have had a good year as well due to the same reasons that Amazon and Wish have been getting lots of downloads.

With all of that having been said and now out of the way, it is important to note that marketplace apps in general are performing incredibly well and this means that this industry is probably going to see a lot more investment and innovation in the future. The fact that Amazon has been prevented from creating a monopoly in this category is also a pretty heartening sign.
