The number of smartphone subscriptions in 2020 has more than doubled since 2015 from 3 billion units to 6.1 billion units increasing at a CAGR of 10.54% from 2016 to 2020. According to a report, 46.5% of the world’s population is using smartphones compared to just 33.5% in 2016.
According to the new report of BuyShares, the number of smartphone subscriptions in 2015 was 3,003 million units, and then it increased to 3667 million units in 2016, and 4,4435M, 5,095M, 5,642M, and 6,055M in 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. The usage of smartphones has increased especially during the COVID-19 pandemic situation when people are ordered to stay at home, they mostly do their work on it and connect with their friends and family, therefore, people prefer to use the smartphone. The smartphone had become more attractive to people soon after the launch of the iPhone in 2007. That was the first time when people had full access to the internet just like desktop computers or laptops.
China is at number 1 in the list of most smartphone users in the world around 912 million smartphone users in the year 2020, population also matters while calculating these numbers because China has the highest population therefore, more users use a smartphone in this country, however, the penetration rate of China is stood at 63.4% which puts this country at 8th number in 2020. The USA is at the top of the list in 20 highest penetration rates in 2020 with almost 81.6%. however, 15 other countries from the top 20 list have more than 50% penetration rate including the UK, Germany, France, South Korea, Italy, Russia, China, Vietnam, Iran, Turkey, Japan, Indonesia, Mexico, Thailand, and Brazil.
