So the main problem of every social media platform including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat is bullying, harassment, trolling, and online abuse. These platforms receive millions of reports every month for online abuse. However, despite so many struggles that these social media platform has made the ratios of these cases has increased. A few days ago Twitter added a new option to limit the tweets on your post according to your choice means that you can allow the persons who can tweet on your post which can help to reduce the chance of trolling, abuse and bullying.
Many authorities and social media platforms are weighing various considerations on how to tackle these issues with trolling online and synchronized manipulation. These platforms have worked on different features and methods on how to stop these issues, however, a proposal has been raised frequently that whether personal identity verification can be a mandatory element while creating a social media account because the social media accounts can have the data and information about who is using the social media account so that he can be tracked easily. Most of the time, it happens that the criminals make the social media accounts with a fake identity, and names, etc.
Many people including the UK celebrity named Katie Price filed a petition to British Parliament that this requirement should be included in the law of Britain so that every person is required by law to verify his identity while creating a social media account. This petition immediately got more than 100,000 signatures to get the consideration of parliament. Now the question is why only social media accounts require personal identity verification? So it is simple to understand that everyone is using social media platforms and some of them uses this platform as their entertainment to bully and troll other people, it is some sort of entertainment for them. Therefore, these platforms have to face more cases.
This looks like a reasonable proposal to track down a person involved in the offense as noted by Price, if a person is under the age of 18 years, the account will be verified with the ID of guardian or parents so that these anonymized activities can be stopped because after providing the identity, these activities can be traced easily. Katie Price has given this suggestion based on her experiences that she faced online when people tried to bully her and she even saw her teenage son Harvey who suffered from Prader-Willi syndrome, which is a kind of genetic disorder that can cause behavioral complaints. Price tried to aware people of this disorder on social media platforms but she received much criticism from different people directed at herself or her son.
This proposal makes a lot of sense because social media platform has become an integral part of our daily routine and we cannot skip running an account without identity verification, who am I talking to? Would that make sense? Well absolutely not. During the 2016 presidential election campaign, some Russian women targeted American women through misleading accounts on social media, due to which Facebook changed its policies that advertisers running political ads are required to have US-based mailing addresses.
Facebook has also introduced a Page Publishing Authorization Program in which the managers of pages are required to verify their identity to confirm that whether the information provided on their pages is genuine or misleading and Facebook further expand such identity verification to their personal profile in May last year. Instagram has used the same techniques. These are also similar to the proposal of Price but these new policies and measures are connected to the remote cases, not to the individual profiles that are the main part of Price’s petition because these cause a lot more damage.
Because you don’t even know who will be involved in a similar offense, therefore, every social media platform must have to make it their mandatory requirement to create an account because when the person knows that if he is going to be the part of an offense he can be traced easily so he will definitely think before trolling other persons.
