The Evolution of Advertising Over the Past Four Decades (infographic)

Advertising is a really important aspect of how businesses can get the word out about the kinds of products and services that they may be offering at any given point in time. However, with all of that having been said and now out of the way it is important to note that the manner in which we tend to advertise, or rather the money that ends up getting spent on ads and where it is spent, has changed over the years.

A big part of the reason what that is the case has to do with the fact that we have changed where we put our focus the most, and as a result of the fact that this is the case advertising agencies have started making a few changes here and there to try and make it so that people can end up getting a lot more out of the kind of advertising that they are seeing on a regular basis.

One major change that has been seen in the world of advertising has to do with the rise and fall of television ads. While TV ads are certainly not dead and gone for good, they have seen a bit of a decline from the peak of their popularity back in the mid 2010s. It’s impressive to see that TV managed to stay relevant several decades into the rise of the internet, but now it seems things have started to pivot sharply in favor of online media.

Newspaper ads are another area where quite a bit of change has ended up being seen. Newspaper ads saw a decline at the turn of the millennium during a period of time when technology was seeing quite a huge boom, but they managed to recover and see another period of growth up until 2008. In 2008, however, one of the biggest financial crises in history struck the entire world, something that lead to a massive decline in newspaper ads which the industry has failed to recover from. It’s estimated that newspaper readership is about to see a 13.5% decline in 2020 which would be even more disastrous for the industry.

Search engine and social media ads have seen a huge increase, though, with the money being spent doubling from the $156 billion seen in 2015 to about $300 billion this year. In fact, online advertising is now going to consist of a majority of ad spending, 53%, starting this year.
