The COVID-19 pandemic has pretty much forced us to stay at home 24/7. In times like these, streaming applications can do an excellent job of keeping us entertained. So, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that a 15% year-over-year increase in the consumption of streaming services was observed in the last quarter in the US alone.
Between October 25 and November 7, 2020, the top three video streaming apps by time spent in the US were YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu respectively. Amazon Prime Video, Twitch, and Disney+ took the next three spots.
The comparison with the UK audience started off on a similar note with YouTube and Netflix resting at #1 and #2 spots respectively. Twitch emerged as the third most consumed video streaming application in the UK within the aforementioned timeframe. As for Disney+, it claimed the #8 spot while Sky Go closed the list by ranking at #10.
What’s interesting is the fact that the rising popularity of these platforms is not expected to fade away anytime soon. In fact, in the US, the average number of installed video streaming apps per device is expected to jump to almost 10 during the next year.
With captivating shows and movies at one’s disposal along with a chance to interact with other people online, it’s understandable why video streaming apps have become as big as they currently are.
