The security researchers and experts at AV-TEST recently carried out some security round-ups to find out the top best security products for macOS. Unlike popular belief, even macOS Catalina has seen some malware threats. In two years, according to AV-TEST’s reports, the number of malware samples for macOS grew from 50,000 to 100,000, and in the present times, the number has already gone above 700,000! So, it is important to keep an eye on different antivirus software and other security products that can protect macOS computers used in homes, as well as in corporate offices. AV-TEST ran some tests on five security products for home users, which include Avira Antivirus Pro, NortonLifeLock Norton 360, Trend Micro Antivirus, Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac, and Avast Security.
All these software products were evaluated on three major criteria, Protection, Performance, and Usability.
Each security product was first tested on its efficiency to detect and eliminate new macOS malware samples. This helped AV-TEST researchers to give the security products scores based on the criteria of Protection.
Secondly, each security application was given an additional system load and this helped in scoring each application’s Performance.
Lastly, all the applications were tested with some false alarms to determine and score them according to their Usability.
A total of 18 points was set to be the highest for meeting all three criteria, with each criterion getting 6 points for each test.
The topmost scorers that earned a total of 18 points include Avira Antivirus Pro, NortonLifeLock Norton 360, and Trend Micro Antivirus.
Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac scored 17.5 points because it received 5.5 out of 6 points for Protection. It detected 97.3% of the new macOS attacking malware samples.
Avast Security earned a total of 16.5 points as it committed minor errors and detected only 98.6% of new malware samples targeting macOS.
For corporate users, the best software that reached 100% detection include McAfee, Sophos, and Symantec.
FireEye’s security product’s detection rate was around 98.6%, whereas Bitdefender’s detection rate was found to be 97.3%.
For Business users, Sophos Endpoint and Symantec Endpoint Protection for Mac received a 100% score, whereas McAfee Endpoint Security got a total of 17.5 points because of a deduction of 0.5 points in the Usability test. Bitdefender Endpoint Security for Mac and FireEye Endpoint Security received 15.5 points.
All these products were given an extra test for the detection and deletion of less than 1400 Windows malware samples. For private users, the best performers for this test were Avast Security products, Bitdefender, and Trend Micro. Avira and Norton earned a lesser score for this test.
For business users, the same test was performed on various products and it was found out that Bitdefender, Sophos, and Symantec were able to reach up to a 99% score.
All these security products will work to protect our devices and systems, but we also have to be careful while using them and should not click on suspicious links or open untrusted files.
