In this modern day and age where everything seems to be changing at quite a rapid pace, tech companies need to keep up with these changes and part of this involves changing their logos or icons rather frequently. These changes are almost never receive positively and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that people on the internet don’t really like big changes all that much in spite of the fact that they usually help improve functionality in some way, shape or form.
Visual changes are different though. They have a much subtler appeal to them, and responses to them should ideally be taken a little more seriously by the company in question. YouTube’s new icon is a good example of this. The video streaming platform has chosen to go the route of a more minimalist sort of approach with a line based design that seems similar to apps such as Spotify which YouTube is attempting to compete against as well as emulate in some way, shape or form and this redesign is going to be a big part of that.
The new logo was first unveiled on iOS devices and it received a rather mixed response. Many hoped that this mixed response would persuade YouTube not to go move forward with bringing the icon change to Android but it seems like YouTube is dead set on making the change permanent. In spite of the fact that a lot of users didn’t really like these new buttons, it will be coming to Android pretty soon. This might just pay off in the end though because of the fact that such changes often take a long time before they are accepted by users after which they start to be taken as the new normal.
