It’s widely accepted among Apple fans and industry commentators that whenever Apple ends up releasing a new phone the tech company drives up the price of their device by a small margin and sometimes this price increase can be rather shocking as well in certain situation. The new iPhone 12 launch has resulted in four new phones being introduced to the market, with the standard iPhone 12 model costing about $150 more than what the iPhone 11 was available for when it was launched last year.
With all of that having been said and out of the way, it is important to note that the iPhone 12 is even more expensive than a lot of people might initially end up thinking. A big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that when you get the phone you will notice that the only thing inside the box is the phone itself. What this means is that you won’t get airpods or even standard headphones nor would you end up getting any kind of charger/adopter that you’d be able to take advantage of.
Apple is justifying this by saying that most Apple users already have charging cables or airpods from previous purchases and they are trying to reduce wastage by preventing users from getting extra accessories that they might not actually need. Many are criticizing this because of the fact that if Apple’s sole reason for this sort of thing was to try and reduce wastage then they would have reduced the price of the phone to reflect the lack of accessories as well, and the fact that they did not do that makes this seem like they are just trying to earn as much profit as they can all in all by forcing users to buy accessories on top of the original iPhone purchase.
Apple’s other justification is that given the compromised supply lines in the world due to the global pandemic, getting as many phones as possible onto a single pallet has ended up becoming pretty important at the end of the day. The box you would get from Apple is a lot slimmer than the ones you might be used to, and the lack of accessories is what has made something like this actually possible.
It should be noted that Apple has made its accessories about 40% cheaper as well, at least as far as the ones that aren’t included in the box are concerned. This will reduce some of the costs but with the serious price hike this still seems like a rather underhanded move to some consumers.
