US Predicted to Record its most Successful Holiday Shopping Season Ever; Buyers to Spend over 1 Billion Hours on Android!

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, retail giants such as Amazon, Target, and Walmart have recorded highly amazing performances. As per a study conducted by App Annie, an incredibly successful shopping season is on the horizon for mobile shopping applications. In the US alone, buyers are predicted to spend over 1 billion hours on Android gadgets between October and December.

Initially, this substantial growth for mobile commerce was predicted but not at least until 2024-2026. However, the pandemic pushed up the timeline.

Normally, the shopping season is saturated in the weeks leading to Black Friday and Cyber Monday. But it has been predicted that 2020’s shopping season will last longer. One possible reason behind it, in addition to the pandemic, is the delay in Amazon’s annual event, Prime Day.

Prior to Q3, the unemployment rates in the US were over double than they were before the pandemic hit. App Annie suggests that this will result in tighter budgets and more price elasticity of demand. This, in turn, will prompt buyers to look out for deals and promotions even before and after the holiday season.

According to App Annie, Amazon’s official application retained its #1 spot among various Shopping apps in the US, by monthly active users. Moreover, per-week sessions in Shopping apps increased by 25% during the fourth quarter last year. In the UK, a 15% increase was observed during the same period.

Interestingly, App Annie believes that the recent increase in mobile shopping will continue as the current buyer behavior played an important role in the incorporation of the changes implemented due to the pandemic. And these changes won’t be going away anytime soon.

In addition to the shopping apps, App Annie claims that related apps such as PayPal will be witnessing immense success. This has already proven to be true as PayPal recently revealed that the most recent quarter was its best with a year-over-year increase of 29% in terms of the total payment volume.

In countries such as Brazil and the US where COVID-19 has shown no signs of stopping, usage of online grocery shops has also increased considerably. This trend is predicted to go on until after Thanksgiving. Food delivery services such as Grubhub and Uber Eats are also in line to witness an incredibly successful Q4.

But the US isn’t the only country expected to witness a remarkable shopping season because App Annie predicts that China’s Singles Day this year should rack up over 310 billion CNY (or $45 billion US dollars), cementing it as the biggest shopping day in history. This will even surpass the sales record created last year i.e. $38 billion.
