However, the fact of the matter is that this is only scratching the surface of a wider problem, and understanding the root cause of the viral spread of misinformation is important. Negative information gets a lot more attention than positive information due to an evolutionary bias. This was necessary for survival. Information that suggested a nearby predator was essential to self preservation, and positive information just didn’t have the same survival benefits. This means that negative news is often seen as more reliable and trustworthy, and more people will talk about it than positive developments.2. Social Risk Amplification
Every time information is shared in social media it becomes simplified and sensationalized to a certain degree. Once it has been passed around enough times it might be completely devoid of factual information and most of the emphasis would be placed on sensational notions of danger or existential threats.
