Facebook decided to integrate this feature into its own properties and a big part of the reason why that is the case has to do with the fact that Snapchat was targeting demographics that Facebook was struggling with at the time, and Stories have become very popular indeed especially on Instagram where they have been seeing a steady rise in both usage as well as prioritization on the company side.
A couple of months ago, Instagram decided to offer a double row view of stories. Basically, whereas previously you would see a single row of stories that you could look into on the platform now you would be able to see two rows which would allow you to get sneak peeks at more stories which is the sort of thing that Instagram would definitely want since it is trying to push the usage of this feature as much as possible since it was getting a lot of engagement.
