The previews of videos are becoming larger as per the latest trend, following which YouTube is A/B testing the video thumbnails in search results on Android devices that appear as wide as the screen.
So far the thumbnails of videos appear half the width of the screen and on the other half are the details of the video like its name, channel’s name, number of views, etc. But now the leading video platform, YouTube is testing full-screen previews of videos for android devices. The changes will be visible in the Home, Explore and Subscriptions tab as well.
In the new preview layout, the video’s name, channel name, views, and the uploading date will appear underneath the video, along with the avatar of the channel. In the search results, sections are still divided in “Related to your search’ and “For you” with additional queries’ carousals.
The new design shows only two videos at a time on Android screens, instead of six videos’ previews along with some details about the video. This could affect the overall user experience as they prefer seeing more results per page, without having to scroll much.
The large thumbnail A/B testing for YouTube is not yet widely rolled out but rather enabled server-side on selected accounts.
