WhatsApp will now allow an increased number of participants in group calls through the latest beta version update, both on Android and iPhone app. Previously it allowed four people to be part of the group video or voice call but with the new beta versions, it is doubling the number and support up to eight participants.
During times of social distancing, people are staying connected to their friends and family through online communication services. Especially, for the business meetings and online classes during the lockdown situation, people are turning towards the famous video conferencing apps like Google Duo, Hangouts and Zoom.
The popular instant messaging app did not let go off the opportunity to stay relevant in these times and was recently reported to be improving its group calling feature and increased the participants' limit.
According to our testing now up to eight users can be a part of a group video or voice calls over WhatsApp. The update will be rolled out on WhatsApp v2.20.135 beta for Android and WhatsApp v2.20.50.25 beta for iPhone. Currently, it will be available for beta users only, of both Android and iPhone and it is expected that soon the feature will be available on the stable version as well.
In our testing we noted that only the users on the latest beta version will be able to make a group call of up to eight participants. In case you already have the updated version but have not got access to the latest feature, get the updated configuration from the server by reinstalling the WhatsApp, but make sure you have backed up your chat history before you uninstall and reinstall the app.
To make a group call, open the WhatsApp group and press the call button seen on the top right corner in the group. If the group has eight or lesser participants, the call will start directly. If the number of participants is more than eight WhatsApp will ask to select fewer group members you want to add in the call and in-case all participants don't have the latest version Whatsapp will pop up a message that call can't be connected.
It is important to note that you have saved the contacts of participants you want to add to your group call, otherwise, they will not be added to the group call made by you.
