Remember when we were advised to switch to macOS since it offered better security than Windows? Apparently, the tides have turned and Apple users are now on the lookout for effective antiviruses for safeguarding their systems and data.
Over the years, dangers and threats directed towards macOS users have surged. Due to this, numerous security companies have been working on tools and tech to overcome these threats. Due to this oversaturation, it’s quite hard to find the ideal solution/antivirus.
In order to help out macOS users in going for the best security product, AV-TEST conducted a two-round study over February and March. The purpose of the study was to assess how the “top” security/antivirus tools have been doing their jobs particularly for home. Perhaps, the results will help you in choosing the best security companion for your Apple device.
The products that were a part of the research were assessed on three fronts i.e. protection, performance, and usability. A maximum of six points could be given to a particular tool in each category. That means the “best” security product should have a score equal or close to 18!
So, the researchers evaluated 10 security solutions. Only 5 of these were able to secure all 18 points (full six points in each of the three categories). These 5 products are Trend Micro Antivirus, NortonLifeLock Norton, Kaspersky Internet Security, Intego VirusBarrier, and Bitdefender Antivirus for Mac.
It was quite shocking to find out that Avira Antivirus Pro, a highly regarded security program didn’t perform as per the expectations. It managed to bag all 6 points in the usability and protection criteria. However, it was given only 3.5 points for performance after evaluation.
Moreover, Tuxguard Antivirus ended up attaining the lowest score out of the 10 (6 for performance, 4 for usability, and 0 for protection). It’s quite ironic that a product responsible for protecting data ended up getting 0 points for the same.
So, we hope that these results will help you in choosing the ideal antivirus for your macOS devices. AV-Test has also published the best MacOS antivirus software for business users make sure to give a read as well.
Do you know of (or use) any other security tools for your Apple gadgets that were left out of this study? If yes, let us know in the comments!
