Recently, PCMag - US-based magazine, conducted a survey of 1000 respondents in which parents of preschoolers to college students are included. The survey was not limited to smartphones. Parents were also asked about the appropriate age for kids to have tech devices including tablets, laptops and smart speakers.
Regarding smartphones, 53 per cent of parents think that 12 to 15 years of age is right bracket to give phones to kids whereas 23 per cent answered 9 to 11 years of age is suitable. 17 percent of parents had an opinion that 16 to 18 years of children can be given phones.
When the parents were asked about the best age to give tablets, they have different opinions. 27 percent of them answered that 9 to 11 years of children can use tablet well. 23% and 26% of them answered that suitable age to give tablet is 12 to 15, and 6 to 8 respectively. 10 per cent of parents are in the favor of giving a tablet device at the age of 16 to 18.
Laptops are used by the majority of students for their projects and assignments. Therefore, 41 per cent of parents said that 12 to 15 years of age is suitable for age to give laptops. 26% said that 9 to 11 years of age is suitable to give a laptop. While, 10 percent think 6 to 8 years is the best age to give the laptop device.
Smart speakers are getting common nowadays and the majority of children use it to solve their school’s mathematical problems by asking Alexa simple questions like “What is 2+2?”. Therefore, the concerns about its use are increasing and that’s why 39 percent of parents said that 16 to 18 years of age is better to give smart speakers. 27% and 20% said that 12 to 15 and 9 to 11 years of age is suitable to hand smart speakers.
So, these are results of the survey conducted by PCMag. The results differ vastly but the most important thing is parenting. If, parents are providing a healthy environment to their kids then age bracket would not affect that much. Yet, parents need to frequently educate kids about their screen time and internet life, because if they give kids access to digital world, it means along with plethora of useful information, they are also exposing them to potential bad actors. Plus, it's imperative to have a physical and digital world balance, because the more kid explore the actual world, the more amazing things they will learn.
