Despite facing a fine of $5.7 million by FTC and modifying its policy regarding under-aged users – TikTok managed to retain it's no. 1 position as the most downloaded app on the Apple App Store. And that too for five quarters in a row.
The statistics were revealed in a new report from Sensor Tower.
During the Q1, the app saw more than 33 million downloads, beating YouTube, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger. Twitter also had a good quarter and garnered the 16th position.
The year also took off to a good start for the App Store that saw 11.7 million downloads – its biggest quarter in downloads since Q1 2015.
The download trends differ slightly from the iOS App store for Google’s app database. In Android devices, WhatsApp claimed the top position with nearly 199 million installs in the first quarter of 2019. It was followed by Messenger, TikTok, Facebook, and Instagram – that saw more than 150 million installs respectively.
TikTok also saw a huge quarter in India, where 88.6 million new users installed the app in the first quarter. This was 8.2 times increase from the first quarter of 2018.
However, Sensor Tower notes that the future quarter might not be as substantial for TikTok. This is because the app was part of several controversies in the last few months including the recent ban in India. Although the ban is now lifted, it is estimated that the app lost around 15 million downloads as a result.
YouTube kids is another app that is making news this quarter with over 29 million downloads on Google Play and became a part of the top 20 apps.
