Instagram has been trying to diversify its user experience for quite some time now, and one of the main reasons for this is that it’s trying to create new avenues for revenue generation that weren’t as widespread as they had been before. According to ace reverse-engineer Jane Wong’s latest tweets, it seems like Instagram is going to be experimenting with a new Shopping Bag tab as well.
This update was released in the form of a screenshot that showed the shopping bag section on Instagram’s side panel (menu) which indicates that the feature is coming soon. It’s important to note that the feature is probably going to stay in the beta version of the app at least for the time being, so there is a chance that users may never see it at all and if they do end up seeing it, it will probably be at some point in the future after the feature has been tested out.
While we don’t quite know what exactly this feature is going to entail, there is a probability that it will be a shopping cart type feature that would allow you to purchase products on Instagram. Facebook has been pushing Instagram as an online shopping option for some time now, and even though their attempts have been more or less low key it’s fair to say that they are definitely moving towards trying to compete with the likes of Amazon and eBay although it will be a while before they are able to bring Instagram up to that level.
