Google is soon going to introduce Newspack, a cost-effective publishing system which aims to assist the local news publishers around the world.
According to the official announcement, Google has partnered up with web development giants, Automattic and WordPress in order to create this publishing platform. This Google News Initiative will give equal opportunity to every small newsrooms in the digital world.
Around $1.2 Million has already been invested in the pre-development phase whereas the prototype will soon be ready in the upcoming weeks. However, Newspack will only be available to the general publishers later this year.
Publishers on this platform will have access to all the plugins of Wordpress created by their development team and the goal is to make journalists write as much as they want without having to worry about the complications of a system.
Apart from the investment, Google will focus more on Newspack feature set, based on feedback obtained from local publishers. It will also play its role in providing technical support for the integration of Google products.
Currently, Newspack has also received funding from the Lenfest Institute for Journalism, The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Civil Media which together sums up to another $1 million. For journalists striving to thrive on digital platforms in the Asia- Pacific region, Newspack might just be what they were looking for.
