Facebook has always had trouble translating its feel good, supposedly nostalgia inducing algorithm into the real world. For example, the memories that we often get reminded of by Facebook are sometimes pleasant. Sometime they are anniversaries or birthdays or other momentous occasions.
Other times, however, we end up getting reminded of an awful event that made us feel terrible. Examples of this are when a relative dies, or when we get sickening news of some sort. We often get these less pleasant reminders because of the fact that the algorithm sends you memories based on interactions, and unfortunately unpleasant posts get just as many interactions as positive ones.
One of the latest scandals that Facebook is facing involves users getting notifications on the social network, only to find that the message is an old one that they got a long time ago and have obviously already seen. This occurrence had been a non issue for some, cause for embarrassment for many and a traumatic experience for a few people that found intense exchanges being brought up yet again.
Users on Twitter reported this to Facebook, with some claiming that seeing old Messenger messages had left them traumatized. The social media platform will be checking into this issue, and has officially confirmed that it is a widespread flaw that needs to be dealt with.

In a statement, Facebook explained to TheVerge “Earlier today, some people may have experienced Facebook resending older messages. The issue, caused by software updates, has been fully resolved. We’re sorry for any inconvenience.”Problems like this are bound to occur when you have a platform that is as big as the one offered by Facebook. However, they need to be solved because of the fact that Facebook is more than just some app or website, it is a place where we experience and communicate some profound emotions and it needs to be treated as such.
