In the past two years, Facebook had a very tough time because of several scandals including the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal and the recent data breach where 50 million Facebook users' private data was exposed. Still, Facebook has been growing slowly and steadily. In the third quarter of 2018, Facebook has generated about $13.78 billion in revenue while the monthly active users have been grown to 2.27 billion.
In fact, if we look closely, there are 2.6 billion active users using Facebook and its apps including WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram. The number of daily active users has also jumped to 1.49 million on the core Facebook app, means that is increased by 9% as compared to the third quarter of 2017. This clearly shows us the power of Facebook.
In the first quarter of 2018, the total active users on Facebook were 2.20 billion. But this figure was decreasing in the second quarter, that was like an alarming situation for Facebook. In the third quarter, Facebook hit back and the figure has increased to 2.27 billion. That means, 70 million new monthly active users connected to Facebook within nine months.
In a recent blog post, Mark Zuckerberg said that they now have over 2 billion people in their community and continuously growing. He further added that the company is considering private messages and stories seriously and it's the future as 100 billion messages are being sent daily across Facebook, Messenger, and WhatsApp while 1 billion stories are being shared on Instagram daily.
"We’re building the best messaging and stories and community tools in the world, and our video services are getting better.", said Mark Zuckerberg Founder and CEO of Facebook, adding further, "But we still have a lot of work to do."
Zuckerberg highlighted the competition in his post as well, he said, "We are leading in most countries, but our biggest competitor by far is iMessage, and in important countries like the US where the iPhone is strong, Apple bundles iMessage as a default texting app, and it’s still ahead. In countries where there's more competition between iOS and Android, like much of Europe, people tend to prefer our services."
Zuckerberg also added some words about people's privacy and said it's really important for them to protect users data and they should feel safe.
Let me start by saying that last month we had a serious security issue. Our teams did well to find and close the vulnerability quickly, but we have a long road ahead to prevent these kinds of attacks in the future.
According to him, "Let me start by saying that last month we had a serious security issue. Our teams did well to find and close the vulnerability quickly, but we have a long road ahead to prevent these kinds of attacks in the future. Over the last couple of years, though, we've done a lot of work and made a lot of progress. We still have at least a year before our systems are at the level that we want, but they're getting better every day – and that's both technology and people. Our systems for proactively identifying harmful content are improving. Our systems for detecting interference in elections are a lot more mature now."
"Overall, this has been an important year. It's been a tough year, but we've built products that I'm proud of and made a lot of progress on some of our hardest issues. As always, I appreciate your support and thank you for being part of this journey with us.", wrote Facebook CEO in his blog post in the ending note.
