Instagram has confirmed to TechCrunch that they are building their own data portability tool. The functionality of the portable tool will enable the users to keep track of their data by downloading a copy of everything they share on the platform, including images, videos and messages. The tool is somewhat similar to Facebook’s download your information tool which will ultimately assist Facebook-owned Instagram users in keeping a check of how much their data is on the social network.
The move will also help Facebook in abiding by the upcoming European data privacy rule as it requires all the data to be portable. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) rule would also want the companies to erase all the data if a user requests so.
