Dan Zarrella (a social media scientist) gathered a dataset of 1.5 million Instagram photos from over half a million different users. And analyzed the images including their tags, captions as well as the actual visual content of the photographs to identify the characteristics that make images work (or not work).

- Adding more tags mean more likes and comments.
- No filter is the best filter.
- Photos with captions that included the word "like" tended to have more liked-per-followers than those without. Those with "comments" got more comments.
- Desaturated photos, Photos with faces, Busier photos, Cool colors and brighter photos get more likes.
